Singapore 2026 PSLE Chinese Oral Reading – Xiaodong the Kind
This is a PSLE Chinese oral reading practice passage for 2026 in Singapore. The passage tells the story of a hungry mother and child who were rudely turned away by the noodle shop boss, and Xiao Dong took the initiative to warm them with two buns. For the whole reading, remember this formula: when the boss is fierce, read fast and loud; when the mother and child are weak, read slow and soft; when Xiao Dong is kind, read steady and gentle; when the ending is shy, read hurriedly and stop quickly. Do not aim for a nice-sounding reading, aim for it to sound like three different people speaking.
High-Scoring Reading Aloud Techniques
- Strong contrast between character voices (most critical for scoring)
The passage has two very different characters: the boss (rough) and Xiao Dong (kind). When reading, you must draw a clear line in volume and pace.
When reading the boss's lines “没钱就别想吃面!走开!”, raise your volume and speed up. In particular, the two words “走开” should be short and sharp, like a slam, to show impatience and humiliation.
When reading Xiao Dong's action “小冬便从篮子里拿出了两个包子”, suddenly slow down and soften your voice. Especially “两个包子” should be read clearly and gently, creating a stark contrast with the boss's harshness. The examiner will immediately notice this contrast.
- Pay special attention to "空" and "好几天"
When describing the mother and child's state, don't read too fast or smoothly.
When you reach “手里拿着一个空盘子”, pause slightly before the word “空”, then stress it a bit more, so that the listener really feels the plate has nothing in it.
When you reach “我们已经好几天没吃东西了”, draw out the three words “好几天” and read them more softly, as if too weak to speak loudly. This helps the examiner sense the pitiful mood.
- The boss's final "不好意思" should suddenly become softer
The boss starts off fierce, then feels embarrassed later. You must bring out this change.
When you reach “老板看了”, pause for about one second, so the listener also has a moment to think.
Then when reading “感到不好意思”, suddenly lower your volume and soften your tone – you can even read it a little hesitantly, like someone who has done wrong and dares not speak loudly. This sudden shift from loud to soft expresses shame far better than reading it loudly, and it's a mark of a mature reader.
- Read narrative sentences steadily, and handle character dialogue separately
For narrative sentences (e.g., “一天,小冬提着一篮包子”), use a moderate pace, as if painting a scene, but remember to take a breath at every comma – don't rush through.
All character dialogue (the boss's words, the boy's words) should have their own rhythm. The boy's lines should be softer and more halting, while the boss's lines should be heavier and more continuous. The examiner is listening for whether you can switch between these styles.
- End with these final three sentences in this way
The last three sentences: Xiao Dong gives the bun → the boss sees it → feels embarrassed. These three should be closed off layer by layer.
For the first sentence “把包子放进小男孩的空盘子里”, read it slowest and with most emphasis, so the listener notices the action of "放".
For the second sentence “老板看了”, read it a little softer, like observing quietly from the side.
For the third sentence “感到不好意思”, read it softest and end it quickly – don't drag the sound out. Let the feeling of shame simply rest there. This kind of ending will leave a strong impression on the examiner.
