Singapore 2026 PSLE Chinese Oral Reading – Visiting Grandma
This is a 2026 PSLE Chinese Oral Reading practice passage for Primary 6 in Singapore. The passage is in first person, about a child visiting his sick grandma, cheering her up with school stories, and seeing her recover a week later. The emotions shift clearly from worry to gentle reassurance to relief. But to score well, it's not about "putting in feeling" or "reading smoothly" — it's about using vocal skills to bring out these three emotional changes. Below, I break down the specific strategies that can help you gain marks, with each point linked to details in the passage.
《探望外婆》
一天,舅舅打电话告诉我们外婆生病了,我请求妈妈带我去探望外婆。
到了外婆家,我看到她躺在床上。她的气色不好,看起来无精打采。我走到外婆身边问道:“外婆,您还好吗?”外婆轻轻一笑,有气没力地回答:“别担心!我很快会好起来的。”过后,我把学校发生的趣事告诉她。外婆一边听我说话,一边微笑。
过了一个星期,外婆的病终于好了,我们这才松了一口气。
High-Scoring Read-Aloud Techniques
- Let your pace follow the emotion
The opening line "一天,舅舅打电话告诉我们外婆生病了" carries urgent news, so speed up slightly, raise your pitch a little, and convey the breathlessness of receiving bad news suddenly. When you reach "我看到她躺在床上", you must slow down and soften – stretch each word just a touch, so the listener can feel you tiptoeing in and feeling for your grandmother.
- Switch your voice and breath for dialogue
This is where marks are most easily lost – and most easily gained.
When asking Grandmother, use a gentle, concerned tone, as if leaning close to her bedside and speaking softly: "外婆,您还好吗?" Place the stress on "您" and "好", with a slight upward lift at the end to indicate a question.
Grandmother's reply should be weak, slow, and breathless: "别担心!我很快会好起来的。" The exclamation mark here should not be read with force; instead, read it as a comforting, hushed tone. Lighten the "很快", and let "好起来" be pushed out on a breath, to show she is low on energy.
When telling the funny story, your tone should be bright and lively, with a slightly quicker rhythm, creating a clear contrast with Grandmother's weakness. At the end, when you read "一边微笑", let a hint of a smile come through in your voice.
- Use "light stress" or "stressed pauses" on key words
"气色不好" and "无精打采" should be read heavily, with each syllable clear and given full duration.
"松了一口气" is the emotional turning point of the whole piece. Read it with ease and release – draw out the "松" for an extra beat, and run "一口气" together quickly to show relief.
- Pauses matter more than fluency
After "过后,我把学校发生的趣事告诉她", pause for half a beat to signal a shift in topic and the start of the story. Before the word "微笑" in "外婆一边听我说话,一边微笑", pause again – let the listener picture the scene first, then read "微笑" softly, tapering off in volume and pace to leave a warm afterglow.
- Maintain a clear switch between "narrator" and "characters" throughout
For narrative parts (e.g. "到了外婆家", "过了一个星期"), use a steady, clear medium pace. For character dialogue, switch your voice and breath immediately. Examiners value this "immersion" most highly – it scores better than mere accurate pronunciation.
