Singapore 2026 PSLE Chinese Oral Reading – Study Schedule
This is a PSLE Chinese oral reading practice passage for 2026 in Singapore. The passage tells the story of Xiao Ming, who feels bad about himself after failing an exam, and with his friend's suggestion, makes a study timetable and improves. The key to scoring well for Reading Aloud is to use pauses to show emotional shifts, use stress to differentiate between self-blame and encouragement, and use tone changes to show the progression from "worried" to "positive". At the same time, avoid reading in a flat, monotonous way and mumbling your words.
《学习时间表》
放学了,小明和小华一起走路回家。小明一路上沉默不语,看起来很烦恼,他叹了一口气说:“我的考试不及格,妈妈知道了一定会很难过。都怪我当初没好好准备,只顾着玩电脑游戏。”小华听了,说:“那你可要好好安排时间,为下次的考试做准备。”小明听了点点头。
于是,小明为自己制订了一个时间表,每天照着时间表温习功课。最后他的学业果然有了明显的进步。
High-Scoring Reading Aloud Techniques
- Pace and Pauses: Use Silence to Convey Emotion
The passage opens with an "anxious" scene. When reading, you must pause briefly after saying "叹了一口气说", then slow down to read "我的考试不及格,妈妈知道了一定会很难过". This pause helps the listener get into the character's shoes. Also, take a short breath before transition points (like "于是" and "最后") to keep the structure clear. Avoid reading at a constant speed throughout – that will sound like chanting.
- Stress and Tone: Highlight Key Emotional Shifts
You need to use vocal contrast for the three layers in the passage:
When expressing self-blame, stress "都怪我" and "只顾着" with a slightly heavier, lower volume, and let your speech flow with a hesitant feel.
When Xiaohua offers comfort, keep your tone lighter and more affirmative, stressing "好好安排时间" to show that the advice is practical.
At the end, when showing improvement, stress "明显的进步", with a slight rise in volume to give a sense of relief and closure.
- Character Differentiation: Switch Roles with Vocal Quality
Xiaoming's lines should sound more introverted and low-key, while Xiaohua's lines should be brighter and crisper. Even without exaggerating your voice, you can distinguish them through breath – let Xiaoming's sentences end with a hint of breathiness, while Xiaohua's end more sharply. For example, when reading "那你可要好好安排时间", lift your pitch slightly to contrast with the sinking tone used for Xiaoming's sighs.
- Punctuation: Vary Pause Lengths According to Punctuation Marks
Pause for half a beat at commas, one full beat at full stops, and add inflection for question/exclamation marks. Pay special attention to the colon after "说" – you must pause there to let the audience anticipate what follows. For instance, after reading "小华听了,说:", pause for half a second before delivering Xiaohua's lines – this instantly clarifies the logical flow.
